Honour for music icons

Edward Tsumele

The late African reggae icon Lucky Dube will be one of six South African musicians who will be honoured on December 2 at the Tribute to SA Music Heroes Concert at Moretele Park, Tshwane.

Dube, who was killed last month in a botched hijacking, will be honoured alongside Busi Mhlongo, Don Laka, Vusi Mahlasela, the late Jabu Khanyile and Queeneth Ndaba.

The concert, which is the brainchild of Sam Mhangwani and Leonard Sithole of Drakensberg Promotions, will also see top talent on the local music scene performing to what is expected to be a capacity crowd.

The Tribute to SA Heroes Concert celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

It promises to be the biggest and hottest party ever at the popular venue as one of the most memorable music celebrations in the history of South African entertainment. The sheer size of the 10th anniversary Tribute Concert and the expectation it creates among music lovers across the country present a telling contrast to the humble beginnings of the event in August 1998.

First mooted 10 years ago as the "first outdoor festival to honour legendary icons of the musical arts in South Africa", the Tribute Concert was lambasted by industry insiders as a "tired concept" and an event based on the "faded reputations of long forgotten stars".

Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Abdullah Ibrahim and Jonas Gwangwa were honoured at the first Tribute Concert.

The line-up will include Masekela, Semenya, Mbulu, Gwangwa, Laka, Jimmy Dludlu, Bhudaza, Ringo Madlingozi, Judith Sephuma, Mahlasela, Ntando, Mafikizolo, Malaika, Siphokazi, Richy Ramolefe, Mathapelo, Ambassadors of Jazz, Wadee, Heritage School of Music, CAFCA and Lucky Dube's Band.

Gates open at 9am. Tickets cost R160 at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers.
