It took the intervention of the Home Affairs director-general to get telephone lines at four East Rand offices working again.
Workers at Springs, Nigel, Brakpan and Benoni had for two weeks been twiddling their thumbs after their telephone lines were disconnected due to unpaid bills.
But after a letter to director- general Mavuso Msimang from the DA, the matter was attended to in less than 24 hours.
A regional manager in the area confirmed that telephone lines were restored by 10am yesterday.
"We had a call from the headquarters in the morning and hours later the telephones were back to normal," said manager Themba Ndebele.
He could not say how much was owed or why the bills were not paid.
The DA's Mark Louw said it was shocking that telephone lines were not attended to for two weeks. As a result, the workers were unable to process identity documents or passports during that period.
