The controversy surrounding the quest for kingship status has taken a new twist with yet another tribe in Kwazulu-Natal - the Griqua clan in Kokstad - now demanding their fair share of the kingdom.
Griqua leader Cyril George Gangerdien said they will make a submission before the Nhlapo Commission to have their king, Adam Kok, declared the rightful "Griqua monarch".
Their request was sparked by a billboard erected at the entrance to Kokstad that reads "Zulu Kingdom".
The billboard is the work of the province's tourism authority - Tourism KZN.
Gangerdien said: "We don't belong to the Zulu kingdom, but to the Adam Kok kingdom. We want the signboard removed and a new one reflecting "Griqua Kingdom" to be erected."
KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Council deputy chairman, Chief Mzimela, said: "I have never heard about the Griqua Kingdom. This province belongs to one king - Goodwill Zwelithini."
