Orlando police in Soweto took the 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children to school children in Dube yesterday.

Police spokesman Nomvula Mbense said they had invited the community and the children to make them aware of the importance of the campaign.

"We hope to instil in them the message that no one is alone. We can work together to defeat this scourge," said Mbense.

Angie Diale, an HIV-Aids activist who also went through an abusive marriage, told the children to be aware of their surroundings and to talk to their parents and teachers about anything.

Meanwhile, People Opposing Women Abuse activists chained themselves to the Johannesburg High Court fence yesterday.

This, they said would continue until the last day of the campaign next month.

The activists, who also taped their mouths shut with red masking tape, were highlighting the suffering of rape victims in the justice system.

There were gatherings countrywide, with the police and community policing forums interacting with communities.

Today is the third day of the campaign which will run until December 10.
