If you did not utilise the blacklisting amnesty at the end of September, make sure that you don't miss the extended deadline in December.
September saw the end of the amnesty opportunity provided by the National Credit Act to consumers.
Credit Information Ombudsman, Manie van Schalkwyk, says that the high volumes of calls received after the September deadline showed that many consumers had slipped up.
He urges consumers to do everything in their power not to miss the extended deadline.
He says that if you have an outstanding judgement of up to R50000 or less, granted before September 1 last year and paid in full before the end of this year, your credit slate will be clean.
"Put those end-of-the-year bonuses to good use by paying off the judgment listings and qualify for the amnesty," says Van Schalkwyk.
Consumers who qualify for amnesty should follow these steps:
l Contact the credit grantor who took the judgment with your account number;
l Verify the outstanding amount;
l Pay the full amount before the end of December;
l Request written proof from the credit grantor that the debt was paid in full;
l Then contact a credit bureau with this proof. Their officers will validate the letter with the credit grantor and remove the information from your credit profile.
