An Afro-pop-jazz and African folklore musician was a big winner at the Metro FM Music Awards in Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay) in the Eastern Cape on Saturday night.
The awards ceremony saw Siphokazi walk away with three awards for Best Female, Best Produced Album and the Best newcomer categories respectively.
L'vovo Derango also demonstrated why he is the kwaito flavour of the moment when he took to Durban (his hometown) what is probably the most prestigious and contested award, the Best Kwaito Album and the Song of the Year categories.
Group of the moment Freshlyground was also rewarded handsomely when they took two awards, Best Group and Best Afro-pop categories back to Cape Town.
Predictably, the Best Compilation Award went to DJ S'bu for his remixing of the Josh Groban song Remember When It Rained.
The ceremony was attended by some SABC top dogs such as chairman Eddie Funde, chief executive Dali Mpofu, the corporation's strategist Sipho Sithole and head of public and commercial radio Bob Mabena.
The event was attended by a capacity crowd that went into a frenzy when L'vovo, Brothers of Peace and other musicians dished out their ditties.
It, however, became obvious that the people's favourite is the rather biggish Derango. Both old and young danced to his music, at some stage threatening to bring down the grandstand.
Though well supported by the locals, sadly this is the last time the awards take place in Port Elizabeth, Mabena announced.
The awards have since played a pivotal role in boosting the economy of this province.
Last year the awards brought in R10million to the Eastern Cape.
