A fourth person has been arrested in connection with the murders of a KwaZulu-Natal couple and owners of the popular Wartburg Hof Hotel, police said yesterday .

Police spokesman Superintendent Henry Budhram said a 21-year-old man was arrested in Umlazi township, south of Durban, on Tuesday and would appear in the New Hanover magistrate's court today.

Three other Umlazi men have already been arrested in connection with the murders.

The elderly couple were gunned down on November 7 at their hotel, situated about 40 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Siggi Schaedle, 68, and his wife Ingrid, 63, were working when an armed man entered the premises after 10pm.

Police said the hotel chef heard screaming in the reception area. He saw a well-built man armed with a gun walking towards Ingrid Schaedle - who was standing behind the reception counter.

The gunman shot the woman before proceeding to the lounge area.

He fired several shots at her husband before fleeing.

A bullet struck Ingrid Schaedle in her left shoulder, while her husband sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper chest.

Both were declared dead at the scene.

No cash or other belongings were taken.
