Africa roars with pride

Much against the usual tide of pessimism that characterises Africa, the continent will tomorrow be the source of world pride when it beams off good tidings from the 2010 Fifa World Cup preliminary draw event taking place on its soil.

Much against the usual tide of pessimism that characterises Africa, the continent will tomorrow be the source of world pride when it beams off good tidings from the 2010 Fifa World Cup preliminary draw event taking place on its soil.

For once it won't be famine, war or disease drawing the spotlight on the continent but soccer in all its supreme glory and fanfare.

Consequently, Africans throughout the diaspora will swell with pride when this first official event in the lead-up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup kicks off in South Africa.

In the words of Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the continent has worked tirelessly for months since it was handed the mammoth task of hosting the 2010 finals in South Africa.

If there was any opportunity to show the rest of the world that Africa will surely rise to the challenge, this is the golden moment to prove it to even the most mealy-mouthed doomsayer.

Durban, the city hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup event tomorrow, will parade its peacock feathers on behalf of the millions of Africans that worship the game and the ground on which its nimble-footed stars walk.

The World Cup has finally come to the people who will give it the soul that has eluded it for so long.

Mayibuye, iAfrica!
