True happiness is having a child

Lindi and Sandile Bholane have been happily married for 12 years and never thought of the possibility that they could be infertile until they tried to have a baby.

Lindi and Sandile Bholane have been happily married for 12 years and never thought of the possibility that they could be infertile until they tried to have a baby.

Lindi Bholane said: "I miscarried more than three times. The last straw was when my baby died when she was six months old. She only lived for 12 hours. I was devastated.

"We tried again, but I did not conceive. I didn't know what to do next, though my husband and I were determined to have a baby."

She said a marathon of complex medical tests and three operations followed, but there was still no baby.

"I didn't understand what was happening, especially because I had a child, now 20, from a previous relationship. Doctors could not explain what was happening," Bholane said.

The couple was considering the in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) method when they heard about Thoko Msiza.

"We talked about it and decided to give it a try. When we got to the clinic, it was packed with couples looking for help.

"We started the treatment and a month later, I conceived. After that I went to a gynaecologist for regular check-ups until my son Thami was born in 1998. Four years later, Nandipha was born without any problems," Bholane said.

A nursing sister at Lilian Ngoyi clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto, Bholane said her husband or in-laws never pressured her to conceive.

"My husband kept telling me that our relationship was not dependent on a child. He was supportive throughout our ordeal and so were our families," she said.

Noxolo Limba, 32, whose child Anga, 2, was delivered by natural fertility specialist Thoko Msiza, said the R14000 she spent was worth it.

"After battling to conceive for nearly a year, my partner and I approached the clinic for help. I used to experience unbearable pain every time we got intimate and as a result, I was unable to conceive. My partner heard about the fertility clinic and we went there for help. After my first consultation, I took the tonic treatment for two months and was then admitted for seven days.

"My partner was treated separately. We continued with the treatment and the pain I used to experience just vanished, and a few months later I conceived," said Limba.
