Former Polokwane mayor Makgaba Lawrence Mapoulo was among the three people accused of assaulting a Limpopo ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader.

His co-accused are Bodikana Joseph Buthane, the secretary of the Young Communist League in the Capricorn region, and Ledikwa Lucas Ramoshaba, who is an ordinary member of the ANCYL in the province.

The three appeared before Magistrate Jan Ngobeni in the Polokwane magistrate's court yesterday to face charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Their case was postponed to March 5 next year. This after their lawyer, who only identified himself as Mr Dikgale, told the court that Buthane, 29, and Ramoshaba, 31, would be visiting Europe in the next two months and that they would only return in the first week of March.

They were warned to appear in court on the said date. The trio is alleged to have assaulted Clifford Mohloana on Friday last week.

The incident happened at the ANC's provincial offices in Biccard Street. Mohloana, 26, had gone there to arrange with the organisation's provincial secretary, Cassel Mathale, to receive a memorandum of grievances.

The outspoken Mohloana leads a group that calls itself the Forum for Activists of the ANC Youth League in the province.

He had arranged a march to the offices to demand the "immediate" disbandment of the Fikile Mbalula-led ANCYL national executive.

The group accused the national executive of overstaying its welcome. Upon arrival at the Polokwane offices, Mohloana was allegedly assaulted by the suspects. He then opened a case with the police. Before the suspects' court appearance, Mohloana appeared in the court where he faced charges of convening an unauthorised gathering.

This after police accused him of staging an unauthorised march which ultimately caused traffic congestion. His case was postponed to February 27 next year for further police investigations.

All suspects were released on free bail.

Mapoulo, 46, became the first mayor of Polokwane during the transition period.
