DA parliamentary leader Sandra Botha has accused President Thabo Mbeki of failing to clamp down on company bosses linked to the ANC, who were involved in allegedly corrupt activities during the Iraq Oil-for-Food programme.
Botha said Mbeki had failed to release findings of the Donen Commission after he had "joked" that he would do so during Christmas last year. The Donen Commission was tasked with probing claims that Imvume Management and Moccoh Services were implicated. Other countries had faced criminal charges as far back as 2005, said Botha.
Botha said Mbeki has replied in writing to a question from the DA on the matter, stating that Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla had asked the state law advisers for advice.
Once the advice is received, Mabandla will make a decision on what action to take and whether the report will be made public, stated Mbeki in his reply to Botha.
"His reply shows there is no urgency on the part of the presidency to deal with the very serious and damaging claims surrounding the Oil-for-Food programme," said Botha yesterday.
"Instead of showing leadership and addressing allegations that South Africa's political influence was sold in exchange for access to lucrative Iraqi oil contracts, the president's prevarication is fuelling the perception that government is slow to probe and prosecute when the ruling party is allegedly involved," said Botha.
