A police officer, who was two months pregnant, sustained serious injuries after a minibus she was travelling in with colleagues overturned in Soweto yesterday.

The officer was among 11 Soweto police officers who were on their way to work in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.

"The police officers were on their way to help with the annual 94,7 Cycle Challenge when the accident happened," said Johannesburg police spokesman Julia Claassen.

The minibus overturned at about 5,30am, just before the Golden Highway.

She said it appeared the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

"The reason why the driver lost control of the vehicle is not yet known, but police are investigating a case of negligent and reckless driving," said Claassen.

She said the pregnant officer was treated as a high-risk patient, while four others were treated for serious head, neck and back injuries. Six other officers were treated for less serious injuries.
