Even former president Nelson Mandela's broadcast speech at the stadium could not coerce Bafana Bafana coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, to attend the post-match press conference after his side lost 1-0 to the United States on Saturday.
Parreira and his technical team staged a no-show and the media were left wondering what had become of the coach and his assistants. This was after the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Ellis Park Stadium.
It is believed that it was not Parreira's first great escape from the media after Bafana's mediocre showing against the US. After the semifinals of the Cosafa Cup against Botswana at Super Stadium in Pretoria a few weeks ago, Parreira did the same disappearing act.
At the post-match conference the US coach, Bob Bradley who was flanked by the side's captain and the solitary goalscorer Steve Cherundolo, said South Africa was teeming with talent.
"We won because our side was disciplined and organised and we knew the route to the goals. We used youngsters at different positions and they did extremely well.
"In the second half the South Africans pushed very hard for an equaliser and we found ourselves in trouble but we defended well. We did not want to give a goal away, otherwise we were going to be under severe pressure.
"But again it was something extra special to play in the Mandela Challenge and a great honour for us and our country," he said.
Cherundolo said: "South Africa has a talented team and they have a great future. If they can utilise youngsters to build a base they can match the best in the world in the future."
The game was not as exciting as expected as our boys failed to make use of their chances, and they lost the ball easily to their opponents. They also failed to convert into goals the chances they created.
Cherundolo's goal in the 24th minute seemed like a rude awakening for Bafana, but their fine touches fizzled out in front of the opponents' danger area.
Sibusiso Zuma and Benni McCarthy saw their chances go a-begging and at one stage McCarthy was roughed up in the Americans' penalty box in the 71st minute, but the referee waved the game on instead of awarding a penalty.
Other players who were a menace to the Americans were Simphiwe Tshabalala, Delron Buckley and Zuma. Teko Modise was not in the game particularly in the second half.
