Lovers of Afro-pop and Afro-jazz are in for what promises to be a memorable weekend, from today at Bassline in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Dubbed Sheer Summer Sounds, the concert, which continues until Saturday, features artists from independent record label Sheer Sound.

Originally a jazz label, the company has since diversified. It has recorded other music genres of Afro-pop and kwaito artists, giving the local music market the whole spectrum of South African music.

At the Sheer Summer Sounds, which is supported by MTN, Sowetan and Sunday World as media sponsors, revellers will be able to sample the best of Sheer Sound artists.

To kick off the concert today will be Afro-pop stars Lesego and Mina Nawe, widely travelled reggae band Tidal Waves and alternative music group Kwani Experience. This concert is expected to attract young people, in particular, because of Mina Nawe and Lesego.

But for mature music fans, Saturday is tailored for them as Afro-jazz musicians Phinda Mtya, Jeff Maluleke, Jaziel Brothers and Ernie Smith will be in the house to give their best.

The artists will perform songs from their new albums. The shows start at 7.30pm and tickets can be bought at the door at R40 each.

To stand a chance of winning yourself double tickets, SMS: Sowetan Sheer Bash, your name and identity number to 34110. SMSes charged at R2,00 each.
