Prominent Banyana Banyana players Veronica Phewa and Janine Van Wyk will be part of this year's Sport Heroes Walk Against Aids campaign, starting today.

The mammoth walk starts in Germiston and ends in Port Elizabeth on December 1.

Also taking part will be other well-know sporting personalities, who include former world boxing icons Jacob Matlala and Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, former Springbok Khaya Malotana, karate champion Marius Botha and runner Willie Mtolo.

The aim of the campaign is to raise funds, give vital education and highlight the danger of HIV-Aids.

Striker Phewa and defender Van Wyk, who will be making their debut, said they were looking forward to the walk.

"This campaign is a good example of how people from different disciples can all get involved in the fight against HIV-Aids,'' said Phewa.

Said Van Wyk: "We want to show the community at large that sports personalties also care about the people who are directly or indirectly affected."

Representatives of the National Association of People Living with Aids Queeneth Mbanageni, Nkululeko Nxesi and Sithulele Sinqe, will accompany the team.

The team will cover approximately 100km a day and will walk across Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape holding sports clinics and community HIV-Aids awareness session.

Proceeds will be donated to Aids hospices and care centres, and donors have been urged to adopt specific homes and build a long-term relationship. The national sport department will donate equipment in all 16 towns along the route.
