Assistant Commissioner Peter Mathongwane's death has left a hole in the South African Police Service, a memorial service in his honour was told yesterday.

At the service held at the SAPS training institute in Pretoria West, deputy National Commissioner Andre Pruis said: "When a police commander leaves this earth, he also leaves a hole that nobody can fill, because he did things his way.

"I remember Mathongwane from Mafikeng at a time when there was a very high crime rate and in his own way he was able to reduce the crime in the area.

"He will always hold a spear and shield wherever he goes. He was a friend and we will miss him always," said Pruis.

Born in North West, Mathongwane, 51, served in the SAPS for 29 years. He was promoted to station commissioner at the Sunnyside police station in 2005.

After South Africa was announced as the World Cup host in 2004, he was appointed chief of security for 2010.

He died on Monday last week after a short illness. Among the mourners were Provincial Commissioner Perumal Naidoo and Divisional Commissioner Arno Lamoer.

Mathongwane was remembered as a strict but loyal and kind person.

"I called him 'Chief' because I could not pronounce his surname.

He was a proud man who served his country well. We appointed him as assistant commissioner because he had leadership quality and we believed in him.

We will continue to help and support his family whenever they need us," Naidoo said.

He survived by his wife Janett Gaetsiwe, sons Kgopolang and Lesogo, and daughters Thato and Aobakwe.

The funeral will be at Trim Park hall in Ventersdorp. The cortege will leave from his home in Tsheing township at 7am.
