The annual Metro FM Music Awards at Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth on November 24 will be a mixture of surprise, disappointment and elation.

The Best Male and Best Female categories have always been the most exciting and competitive.

This year will be no different. Contenders for Best Male Vocalist are Lesego, Ringo and Loyiso, while Nhlanhla Nciza, Lira and Siphokazi are eyeing the Best Female Vocalist award.

Lira surfaces again alongside Jimmy Dludlu and Simphiwe Dana in the Best Jazz category.

Tumi, Loyiso Bala and Danny K will slug it out for the honour of Best R&B, and L'Vovo tests his mettle against seasoned Trompies and T'zozo & Professor in the Best Kwaito category.

In the Best Gospel category, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Vuyokazi and Ntokozo will fight it out to decide who is the most spiritually reviving.

Tuks, Proverb and Jozi will compete for the title of Best Hip Hop artist, while Malaika, Mafikizolo and Freshlyground will vie for the Best African Pop title.
