The festive season is upon us and with all the weddings, year-end functions and braais that have to be attended, gaining weight is almost inevitable during this period.
Mali Ramara, a personal trainer and nutritionist, says she has dealt with many women who have gone through this crisis. She says women have told their stories on how they battle to shed the extra kilos gained during the festive season.
"It is important that women take control of their health and be conscious of what goes into their mouths," she says.
To ensure that losing weight does not form part of your new year's resolution for 2008, here are some festive season nutritional tips for you to practice.
l Never go to a function, party, restaurant or do Christmas shopping on an empty stomach. Have a fruit or a snack and carry water with you.
l When you arrive at the venue, look at the menu or buffet first before you start dishing up. This will help you decide what you want to eat instead of just piling up your plate with food you don't necessarily want.
l Do not mix alcohol with food, use water instead. One glass of wine is equivalent to a meal. If you can not help but drink alcohol while eating, combine your proteins (red meat, fish, chicken) with lots of vegetables and salads with little or no salad dressing.
l Dish up pap or rice the size of a fist and have more vegetables or salad.
l Skip dessert if you can or eat it in moderation.
l A nutritious meal is meant to give you energy and make you feel good, enjoy it and have fun while eating your good food.
