A panel of judges has selected 12 teams of public servants as finalists for the Premier Service Excellent Awards.

The awards, which will be held next week, started in 2002 to inspire, promote and reward excellent performances in the public service.

Gauteng government spokesman Annette Griessel yesterday said a decision was taken to focus on a group of people working as a team rather than rewarding individuals. "The awards encourage teamwork more than individual efforts.

"The awards encourage public servants to implement Batho Pele principles and give recognition to those that go beyond the call of duty in serving people of Gauteng," said Griessel.

The finalists are: Johannesburg Oral Health Service, Tambo Memorial Hospital (Audiology Neonatal Screening and Amplification Department), The Gauteng Housing Rental Tribunal, South Rand Hospital (Occupational Therapy), Bosasa Youth Development Foundation and Vezulwazi Primary School. Others are Bosasa Youth Development Centre for street children, Chalmar Abattoir Hygiene Rating Scheme, The Mobile Application System, Bronkhorstspruit Phumula Project, Examination Services for Gauteng and Philani Community Based Organisation.
