He thought he had escaped arrest - but he had another thing coming.
The alleged gang member was apprehended by the Orlando police's armed robbery task team at a house in Dube, Soweto, yesterday. He was arrested in connection with a host of house robberies in Johannesburg.
Two other members of the same gang were arrested earlier in Parkview, Johannesburg. Another was shot dead after a shootout with police.
The gang had just held up a family at gunpoint in their house.
Police spokesman Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said: "About six suspects held up a family at their home in Parkview on Tuesday. The suspects are alleged to have gained access to the house by pretending to be employees who had come to repair something at the house."
He said the men were wearing blue overalls at the time of the robbery.
"During the robbery, a panic button was pressed and the police responded swiftly to the complaint and surrounded the house.
"As the suspects left the house, a shootout ensued between them and the police. One suspect was fatally wounded during the shootout. Two suspects were arrested on the scene."
Two others managed to escape.
"Two vehicles - a yellow Citroen and a white Opel bakkie - and four unlicensed 9mm pistols and a shotgun were recovered at the house where the suspect was arrested.
"The police also recovered blue overalls and tools allegedly used during house robberies," Mariemuthoo said.
The gang has already been linked to house robberies in Northcliff and Winchester Hills.
The three men are in police custody and are expected to appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court tomorrow. Police are hot on the heels of the two who are on the run.
One of the gang members is believed to be the son of a police commissioner.
Police believe the men could be linked to several cases of house robberies in Gauteng.
