The Inkatha Freedom Party Youth Brigade is upset that senior University of Zululand managers failed to attend the inauguration of the new student representative council.

The brigade feels that rector Rachel Gumbi and registrar Sisho Maphisa snubbed the meeting because the IFP-aligned South African Democratic Students Movement (Sadesmo) took over the SRC from the ANC-aligned South African Students Congress at the university and at Mangosuthu Technikon.

Maphisa denied politics had played a part in the decision.

"It does not matter to what political party a student belongs. We treat them as students. We have agreed with SRC president Thami Xaba to depoliticise our institution."
