Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
I am totally against the decision by the sports minister to do away with quotas because the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup.
As much as we would like players to be chosen on merit and get the best players to represent us in major sporting codes, we cannot continue to give the world the wrong impression about South Africa by sending out a 90percent white team to represent us at major events. We need to keep the quotas until our teams are totally representative.
Sporting codes such as rugby and cricket have not been transformed. To say we need to start by developing black players at school level, and by over- emphasising the lack of the right bone structure of blacks for rugby is a lame excuse.
Certain black players have been playing cricket and rugby for a long time, particularly in the Eastern Cape.
Of the teams which participated at the Rugby World Cup, South Africa was the only team whose composition did not reflect the true demographics of their country. One could have mistaken the Springboks for one of the European teams, which is a shame after 13 years of independence.
The wheels of transformation need to roll on as sports can not continue to exclude the masses.
