Cup seating a dilemma

The Moqhaka Local Municipality is working around the clock to erect grandstands that will accommodate 25000 more spectators for the one-day Charity Cup in Kroonstad on Sunday.

The tournament, which features four top Premiership teams: Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic, was moved from the Saturday to Sunday.

The shift was made because the tournamente clashed with the Nelson Mandela Challenge between Bafana Bafana and the United States at Ellis Park Stadium on the Saturday.

Sowetan went to the stadium, which organisers initially claimed accommodates 30 000, and found the grandstands seat a paltry 5 000 spectators.

This would be of major concern for the municipality because the tournament could attract well over 30000 fans considering the support the four teams enjoy.

Sam Tshabalala, one of the organisers, said the stadium accommodates 12000. Contacted later he refused to give the latest development regarding the erection of grandstands, except to say he was just a "technical sponsor".
