Hundreds of members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church gathered in Orlando West to celebrate their education day on Saturday.

Pupils took time off from learning for their exams to spend with the congregation. Joyous songs, harmonising with the organ, were sung in celebration of the church's special day.

Among the attendees were pupils from Blue Hills College in Midrand, Seventh Day Adventist Primary in Orlando West, and Adelaide Tambo School in Soweto, which caters for disabled children.

Programme coordinator Ngaka Tsagae said: "We believe it is still relevant to have morning prayers at school and for today's generation to have a Christian education.

"Parents should stop passing the responsibility of raising their children to teachers. God gave that responsibility to parents," Tsagae said.

All the speakers emphasised the role of Christian education in fighting the moral decay seen in much of the country and its youth today.

Guest speaker Joshua Maponga related this to the life of Samson in the Bible.

"When the youth are left unguided, one will be shocked at what they can do," said Maponga.

"Christian education is the tool parents can give their children and it will be as strong as what Samson did with a donkey's jawbone."

A special prayer was said for pupils as they write exams and for strength in facing their challenges.
