Former Randfontein Young Zebras forward and master dribbler, Thomas Manno Douglas, has died. He will be buried at the Westpark Cemetery this morning.
Douglas, who was affectionately known as "ABC" during his playing days, died on Saturday after a long illness.
He was a school teacher, a headmaster and an inspector. He played soccer as hard as he studied. While acknowledging that football was an unpredictable game, he urged youngsters to give it a try while concentrating on their studies.
When he went to Madibane High School in 1949, he played in the school's house league. He graduated to play for the school's B division in 1952, playing alongside master schemers such as the late Inch Gwamanda and Wilson Ndaba.
In 1954 he completed his teachers training course at Wilberforce College, and his football career took off. He was promoted to Young Zebras' first team.
After graduating, he joined Anglo American Company which posted him to Welkom in the Free State. In 1955, he joined Thabong Hungry Lions. While at Hungry Lions, he was selected for the Welkom and District Football Association select team that played in the Moroka Baloyi Cup in 1956.
He later returned to Mohlakeng, Randfontein, and taught at Phomolong Higher Primary School.
The funeral service for Douglas, of 1203 Diepkloof Phase 3, will be held at the Bona Chapel AME Church in White City, Jabavu, Soweto from 8am this morning.
l Wallace Maribe, also of Mohlakeng, has passed away and will be buried tomorrow at Zenzele Cemetery.
The flamboyant Wally, as he was affectionately known, was a talkative yet loving person, and a big fan of Al Capone.
Maribe is survived by his brother, Rapule, and two children. The funeral service at Itireleng Centre, starts at 8am.
