Awards preserve our literary wealth

One of the most important parts of a nation's cultural heritage is its literary wealth, and it makes sense to guard it jealously and preserve it.

One of the most important parts of a nation's cultural heritage is its literary wealth, and it makes sense to guard it jealously and preserve it.

This is done in a special way through the South African Literary Awards, a project of the thriving nation-building partnership between the arts and culture department, Sowetan, SABC, the wRite Associates and Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

The awards honour rising and established authors and seek to promote a healthy culture of reading and writing. Revered author and philosopher Mazisi Kunene became the first national poet laureate when the awards were inaugurated in Limpopo in 2005.

Submissions are invited for the Nadine Gordimer Short Story Awards in South African Languages, the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Awards for Young Writers, Literal Lifetime Achievements Awards, Best Radio Television Short Story Awards, the Sowetan Literary Journalism Award and the Literary Posthumous Awards.

The closing date for entries and nominations is Wednesday, November 14. Submissions should be posted to PO Box 4488, Randburg, 2125, or delivered to 74 Mimosa Road, Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg.
