Mpumalanga police are looking for four criminals who allegedly hijacked a marked police vehicle (a BMW) at gunpoint shortly after the police had stopped a "suspicious"-looking vehicle on Monday night.

The criminals who were travelling in two vehicles, a red and a white sedans, had allegedly raped a woman in front of her husband after robbing the family of more than R1000 earlier.

Barberton police spokesman, Constable Jabu Ndubane, said Constables Bheki Dlamini and Sibusiso Nkosi were on patrol when they spotted a suspicious red sedan along the Kaapmuiden/Barberton road at about 9.30pm.

The policemen ordered the car to stop and were in the process of searching the car when another white sedan suddenly stopped next to them.

"Two occupants of the white vehicle pointed the two policemen with firearms, assaulted and robbed them of their service pistols," said Ndubane.

Some of the suspects jumped into the police BMW while the others got into the two vehicles and drove off at high speed, leaving the injured policemen behind.

The police BMW was later found abandoned along the Barberton/Nelspruit road more than 20km away. The petrol card and car keys were, however, missing.

The injured policemen got help and eventually went to the local hospital where they were treated and discharged.

While the police were in the process of investigating the whole drama, a man, his wife and son arrived at the police station to report rape, armed robbery and kidnapping charges against four men allegedly travelling in two vehicles - red and white sedans.

"We realised that the suspects were obviously the same ones that had attacked our members," said Ndubane.

The four suspects had apparently forced their way into a house where they locked the husband into a bedroom while they forced his wife to give them money at about 7.30pm.

She gave them R1200 but when the husband managed to open the bedroom, door he found one of the suspects raping his wife.

The robbers then kidnapped the entire family and drove them in the family car before stopping a short distance away.

Ndubane said the robbers instructed the husband, his wife and son to remain in the car while they escaped.

"It was only then that the family managed to go to the police station and report the matter," said Ndubane.

Police later found two guns, one belonging to one of the cops and the other to the suspects.
