This week's decision by the Gauteng department of community safety to impound more than 150 minibus taxis in Johannesburg should be seen as an action by authorities who have run out of patience with non-compliance with the law by some elements in the sector.

This was a desperate move to end the perennial violence in the industry in Johannesburg.

Though this decision might be considered too harsh and negatively impacting on commuters, all affected parties have to understand that this is an effort to stamp out violence and protect lives.

The ball is now in the court of the feuding factions.
