After obtaining a certificate as a qualified plumber, there are two options to choose from to start earning a living.

You can either look for employment or start your own business. The latter option seems ideal, but there are many things to consider before following this route.

First, you need to decide how to finance the business. Start-up finance is usually an obstacle that many people face when starting businesses.

You need tools and machinery to operate as a plumbing contractor. Having money to buy tools also helps when it comes to securing finance. You must have something to show the financier that you mean business.

It is also important to do some introspection and see if you have the right traits to survive in the industry.

As a plumber you must have:

l Intelligence to work out complex equations;

l Expertise and flexibility to install different systems;

l Knowledge and understanding of how and why different systems work;

l Ability and initiative to solve problems;

l Willingness to learn new things;

l A creative mind, sound judgment and, most importantly, professionalism and honesty;

l A healthy body and mind;

l Willingness to use your hands because plumbing is manual labour.

You must be prepared to get dirty and wet sometimes, use many tools and equipment in a safe and proper way, get used to dangerous conditions and heights and fit into small and cramped spaces. It is very important to be accurate in this business.

You can't afford to make mistakes, especially when you work for yourself. Mistakes are costly and eat your profit.

You must have good people and communication skills because you will have to interact with many people. You must respect people's property and uphold high standards.

Another way of getting into plumbing is buying an existing business or a franchise. Many established businesses sell franchises. Buying one will reduce the stress of running a business on your own because the franchisor offers help.

There are many niche markets to choose from such as installing bathrooms, repairing and installing hot and cold water systems, emergency problems, installing washing machines, dishwashers and clearing blocked drains.
