A dad's premier duty is to family

Another leader bites the dust.

Another leader bites the dust.

Premier Mbhazima Shilowa has been forced by a court to perform his duties as a father. The red-socked Gucci communist with ambitions for higher office, initially denied paternity of a son he has never bothered to acknowledge or support.

The boy took him to court to secure himself a future, something his high-flying father should have assured naturally.

This is a blow to the drive to promote responsible fatherhood, which entails grooming boys to become model citizens.

Shilowa is a snappy dresser, drinks expensive wines, smokes expensive cigars and is a party-loving man.

Yet he left his first family to fend for themselves without a care in the world.

Our society has a dilemma in that there are many problem fathers who do not do right by their children.

Government has had to establish a child grant to feed many children abandoned by their fathers.

Now a whole premier has been shown to be no different from many other delinquents whose children have been left to fend for themselves. It is disheartening that a man who should lead by example has to be forced to face up to his responsibilities.

When Shilowa was general secretary of Cosatu he used his devotion to his mother as a stick to whip government into shape.

Now his own son has had to force him to carry out his fatherly responsibilities.
