Scourge of serial killers

Notably South Africa contributes handsomely to the global catalogue of serial killers, whose macabre deeds claim the lives of hundreds of women yearly.

A common pattern is that women consistently remain victims of serial killers - singled out because they are soft targets. History shows that young children are a close second to women in falling victim to the deadly charms of serial killers.

Media reports last year singled out South Africa's most notorious serial killer Moses Sithole, who murdered 38 women and a child, as holding the dubious record of being the world's worst serial killer.

His trick of luring women to their deaths with phantom job offers was subsequently used to deadly effect by other copycat mass murderers.

Rather eerie is the frequency with which this country produces serial killers, notably with similar bloody modus operandi. A man suspected of being the KwaZulu-Natal sugarcane serial killer, linked to the deaths of 11 women, currently awaits trial.

The ominous question is: what can be done to protect women and children from dangerous stalkers?
