Tension is rising in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the SA Communist Party's provincial congress in December, a few days before the ANC's conference in Limpopo.

At the centre of the conflict are the two lists from the SACP's leadership and its youth wing, the Young Communist League (YCL).

Sources within the YCL say they will challenge current secretary Themba Mthembu, who they regard as a dictator who has gone out of his way to ensure that he is re-elected.

They accuse him of postponing the congress three times, because he was busy lobbying for his own survival in different districts in the province.

They also accuse him of dissolving all the districts that are against his "autocratic rule".

"Of note has been the dissolution of the North Coast district simply because they met ANC deputy president, Jacob Zuma without his [Mthembu's] consent. They have appealed to the central committee.

"He has also suspended the secretary of the Lower South Coast [Port Shepstone and surroundings]. The PEC has subsequently ordered him to withdraw the suspension as it was unfair," said the sources.

The sources also say there is a dark cloud hanging over Mthembu's head. They allege "his history as someone who worked with apartheid special branch forces is now haunting him".

"He is alleged to have worked as a spy for the apartheid government, and PEC members privately hold the view that he must step down to protect the integrity of the party in KwaZulu-Natal."
