A five-year-old Pietermaritzburg girl made a gruesome discovery yesterday morning when she woke up to find her mother lying in a pool of blood.

The child, from Phase 5, had been sleeping when she was awoken by a loud noise in the house.

On checking, she found her mother lying on the floor with a fatal wound to her head.

The deceased, Makhosi Magubane, had been sleeping with her daughter when she was apparently shot.

The brave girl immediately ran to a neighbour's house for help.

The neighbour rushed to the house, where they found that the girl's mother had been shot dead.

Police believe that unknown gunmen entered the house while Magubane and her daughter were sleeping, and fired at Magubane before fleeing from the scene.

A spent 9mm cartridge was found at the scene.

Police are making an urgent appeal to anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer, Detective Inspector Michael Khanyile, during office hours at 033-845-7710 or on his cellphone: 084-236-2263.
