Phosa calls on ANC leaders to respect terms of office

Mathews Phosa, a member of the ANC's national executive committee, has called on party leaders to respect their terms of office.

Phosa, whose name features prominently on lists compiled by party members of officials loyal to ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma, was speaking at the 10-year celebration of the Independent Electoral Commission last night.

His comments were a direct attack on President Thabo Mbeki, who has shown a willingness to stand for a third term as leader of the ANC.

Mbeki's critics have interpreted his acceptance of the nomination as ANC president as an attempt to cling to power, which would allow him indirectly to control whoever will be elected president of the country in 2009.

Phosa said voters deserved a government that governed for the people and not "about the people".

"I mean we should respect terms of office and the wishes of the voters and the electorate which we so ably supported when writing the constitution

"We should at all times be vigilant that we do not close our eyes to the abuse of office, power and status."
