Three men will appear in the Alberton magistrate's court on the East Rand on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm today.

The men - aged 28, 31 and 34 - were arrested on Saturday allegedly in possession of a firearm that had been robbed from a man in Johannesburg in June last year.

Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman Inspector Jimmy Maboko said yesterday that the men were arrested after a police chase.

"They ignored police orders to stop when we tried to stop them. After we caught up with them, we searched the car they were travelling in and discovered that they had an unlicensed firearm.

"The serial numbers of the firearm had not been filed off. We were then able to establish that the firearm had been reported to have been robbed from another man in central Johannesburg last year. The men will then appear in court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and a round of ammunition," Maboko said.

He said the men were found with five rounds of ammunition. The firearm was found hidden in the cabin hole of the vehicle. Maboko also said that police were still trying to establish the owner of the vehicle since it did not reflect the name under which it was registered. He said the men would also be transferred to Johannesburg to face a charge relating to the robbery of a firearm.
