Azanian Love Song, Memory is the Weapon and The Five Magic Pebblesand Other Stories are being republished and widely distributed by African Perspectives.
The new editions have been refined and feature updated covers that fully reflect the timelessness of the works, and will be available in book stores across South Africa and Africa.
First to be reprinted is perhaps Mattera's most famous poetry book, Azanian Love Song, written by Mattera during and after his years living in Sophiatown.
The anthology is widely considered a seminal South African poetry collection, as emphasised by Minister of Arts and Culture Pallo Jordan, who presented 1000 copies of the book during this year's "Celebrating Poetry" Heritage Day celebrations in Bloemfontein.
Accompanying Azanian Love Song is the re-release of Memory is the Weapon, an autobiographical work that has won Mattera the admiration of many readers at home and abroad
Mattera now lives in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg south, and remains a strong community figure, an important leader and father figure. He is also the national patron of a number of organisations, notably youth organisations and those servicing the handicapped and disabled.
"That is because I am handicapped myself. I am deaf in my left ear and blind in my left eye ... I mean we are all disabled in some way" explains the writer, who is clearly looking forward to the re-release of his books.
"It's an exciting moment for me. It's always such a pleasure to see your books being read and enjoyed by new readers."
Mattera appeared at the African Perspectives exhibition at the Rosebank Mall on October 26 and was joined by Irish writer Murray McMillan, author of Tehaka's Journey, an intriguing novel set in the past, present, and future.
McMillan is on a tour of South Africa promoting his book, which has been acclaimed for its thought provoking messages and the manner in which they question the endemic role of greed in past and present societies.
On November 8 Mattera will give a talk at Xarra Book store, Newtown from 6.30pm. On Friday he appeared at the Exclusive Books, Maponya Mall in Soweto.
