Mamelodi Sundowns, escaped by the skin of their teeth, when they narrowly beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a thrilling and an all-action Absa Premiership game at Loftus Stadium yesterday.

It was Pirates at their best in the opening minutes making sporadic but dangerous visits at the Sundowns goal area.

The side, with a lot of youngsters and no foreign player in their midst, played commendably well with their darting runs giving their more experienced opponents some anxious moments.

On a number of occasions the Brazilians goalkeeper Brian Baloyi was called on to make breathtaking saves from Teko Modise, Lucas Thwala, Excellent Walaza and Paulus Masehe.

It came as a surprise when Esrom Nyandoro scored with a ground shot to put Sundowns in the lead in the 36th minute.

Four minutes later the Bucs equalised from a corner kick taken by Bennett Chenene, which Thwala scored with a fine header.

At half-time the Brazilians increased the margin through Benson Mhlongo who headed from a corner kick by Godrey Sapula.
