OR Tambo Games a huge hit

Thousands of Freestaters took part in the exciting OR Tambo Games hosted by the City of Welkom at the weekend.

Inclement weather did deter them from celebrating the 90th birthday of one of the struggle heroes in South Africa Oliver Reginald Tambo in style.

The games is a tribute to the life and times of this political leader and is celebrated nationally.

Struggle veteran Papi Kubu said Tambo was a founder of the Alexandra Football Club and the team's enterprising striker. He also described Tambo as a piano player and composer who worked with several distinguished artists.

The games featured 13 sporting codes including football, rugby, cricket, indigenous games and many others.

Fostering social cohesion among different cultural groups in the province and ensuring that the sporting sprit of Tambo is preserved are some of the objectives of the games. - Meshack Khotha
