Two sisters from Orlando West, Soweto, who accused the Department of Home Affairs of ruining their lives, claim they are still being shunted from pillar to post.
Two weeks ago Sowetan reported that Thembi Nkosi, 29, discovered that she was married to a stranger, while her sister, Thuli, 27, was told that she shared her name, surname and ID number with someone in KwaZulu-Natal.
Thembi found that she was married to 29-year-old China George Chukwekere.
The marriage was registered in September 2004. The marriage certificate shows that the wedding took place in Cullinan, outside Kempton Park.
"The Department of Labour also said that, according to their records, I was working for a company called International Wagon Enterprises," she said.
Thembi said the department in Soweto advised her to sign an affidavit for her "marriage" to be cancelled.
The sisters claimed they were turned away by Noel Vuma, a Home Affairs official at Orlando West, on Friday.
Vuma said the department could not help Thembi and Thuli on Friday because of a power failure.
Thuli lost her ID in 2004 and has battled to get a new one since then. She was, therefore, unable to register the birth of her daughter.
Thembi said that she learnt that she had a husband when she went to register for the unemployment insurance fund.
"I was advised to sign an affidavit for the department to cancel the bogus marriage, but was sent from pillar to post.
"My boyfriend even dumped me when he heard I was married to a stranger," said Thembi.
