Two old women in Tonga, Mpumalanga, have been arrested for allegedly killing a six-year-old girl after accusing her of stealing R6.
Police said the two women, who are in their 70s, were arrested after their neighbours raised the alarm about the gruesome murder of the child on Friday.
Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi told Sowetan that little Nomonde Mathebula, who was the granddaughter of one of the women, had lived with her grandmother for a long time.
Nyambi said: "We were informed that the grandmother started beating her up with a stick after she accused her of stealing the money in the morning.
"The child tried to explain that she did not take the money, but the furious grandmother kept on hitting her. She allegedly called her friend to help her punish the child."
Nyambi said when the friend arrived, the child was lying in a pool of blood. The friend allegedly put the child into a sack and put the sack in a basin full of water. After a few minutes the women realised that the child was dead.
The two women were arrested on the scene and were expected to appear in the Tonga magistrates' court today.
