She couldn't understand the stream of senseless deaths and while I agreed, I also reminisced about the wonderful music Dube wrote over his long career, a career shortened by the greed and viciousness of the murderers who continue to flout the law because they know they can.
Early the next morning, I received a call from a very distraught Jabu saying that her brother-in-law had been killed. He was shot 14 times. She couldn't understand why anyone would kill an unemployed man, a gentle soul, so viciously when the most they would have got was a cellphone.
How do I qualify black-on- black murders in the townships, most of which remain unsolved? Of course crime is not only perpetrated against blacks, but it is people like Jabu who feel their government has abandoned them. They spend their weekends attending funerals and comforting loved ones and neighbours.
If President Thabo Mbeki interacted with these people he would know that the murders of his own people and the protection of criminals in government has made him the most disliked president we have ever had. Apartheid presidents were disliked for different reasons, not for being black and senselessly abandoning black people.
