The death toll from Tuesday night's devastating storm that left hundreds homeless in northern Zululand has risen to two.
Yesterday, disaster management field workers established that the second victim is a 61-year-old grandmother.
Letisa Mcineka burnt to ashes after she was struck by lightning in her home.
The first victim was Malwande Dubazane, 2, who died when the walls of his Nhlungwane home collapsed on him.
Zululand District Municipality spokesman, Chris Sosibo, said mopping-up operations continued in earnest in several areas that were affected by the heavy rain and hail storms.
He said eight areas were affected and over 170 homes destroyed.
"The worst-hit area is Mhlahlane, where more than 105 rooftops were blown off. At Nkonjeni, more than 27 houses were affected, as well as three schools.
"Also in the same area, two churches were destroyed. In the Mahlabathini area, more than 16 houses had their rooftops blown off. At White City, 11 houses were destroyed while seven homes were also destroyed at Mahombeni.
"Our disaster management field workers are still out there assessing the damage.
"They are working closely with officials from the provincial department of welfare.
"The homeless were in the meantime provided with tents, blankets and food," Sosibo said.
