What transpired at the University of Johannesburg recently is reminiscent of what happened during the 1976 uprisings when apartheid security forces unleashed maximum force on students who were protesting against apartheid and its policies.
These students were protesting peacefully against a proposed 14percent fee increment when they were shot with rubber bullets.
When criminals harass our parents and fellow students, stealing their cash, police are always reluctant to act.
When students peacefully protest against a decision that was unilaterally imposed on them by the university council, the police come in large numbers and shoot them.
As the ANC Youth League, we understand that the prices of goods and services have been going up over the years, but for university management to unilaterally impose a 14percent raise on students is unwarranted.
Education remains a basic right and not a privilege. We therefore call on the management of the University of Johannesburg to open up platforms for further engagement on this fundamental issue.
We also condemn the manner in which our SRC on this campus as led by Lwandile Simelane reacted to the whole matter. Their conduct left much to be desired. To them, it is like the proposed 14percent increment won't affect anybody from the so-called Hollywood campus.
