Waiting over as families get homes

Forget aspiring to one of the new houses in Pennyville, a development opposite New Canada Station near Soweto, if you are not on the government's waiting list.

The homes are being allocated only to people who have applied for RDP houses and whose information has been passed on to the Gauteng housing department.

Spokesman Victor Moreriane said the houses in Pennyville are meant for people from Orlando East, the Zamimpilo informal settlement near Highgate shopping centre, and applicants from Noordgesig and Riverlea.

"These people have already registered for the houses and are on the waiting list. They are from backyard shacks in Orlando East and informal settlements outside the township," Moreriane said.

He said 50 families have already moved into the 2800-home development.

"The allocation process will continue until all the units are occupied," he said.

He said applicants not on the waiting list will be accommodated in rental and bonded homes that are still to be built.

The homes at Pennyville are allocated to households who earn less than R3500 a month.
