On his return Mpofu assigned Sipho Sithole, the SABC's head of group strategy and risk management, to lead the project.

Mpofu commented: "As the custodian of South Africa's cultural expressions and tradition, the SABC is committed to the creation of a strong and viable music industry and economic independence for musicians.

"The Vuka Sizwe Benefit Concert is a series of initiatives under the SABC Green Revolution Campaign that will see the SABC taking an active role in, among other issues, the creation of a platform for the development of music across all genres, and the provision of a platform for the identification, development and nurturing of talent across all genres and stars of music.

"Through this benefit concert, we will also seek to raise funds for charitable causes that will create cancer awareness and continue the fight against this dreaded disease, especially among women."
