At least 446 residents of the Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa have laid fraud charges against Ekurhuleni Metro council.

They told police that some councillors allocated RDP houses and serviced stands to people who did not qualify.

Police spokesman Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha confirmed yesterday that 446 residents have opened a case of fraud at Tembisa police station.

Winnie Mandela informal settlement community leader, Victor Morakasi, said they opened the case after they had established that the houses they had applied for since 1994 were given to people who did not even appear on the housing list.

The council spokesman, Zweli Dlamini, said: "We will support any investigation against corrupt officials. We cannot support corrupt people in the council."
