On Saturday, people from across the country descended on the mining town of BaPhalaborwa in Limpopo to pay their last respects to Norman Mashabane, a courageous fighter for the oppressed and exploited masses.
It was unfortunate that they were met by hooligans masquerading as ANC Youth League leaders and members. How can you insult your own leaders at a funeral?
The ANC must shape up the ANCYL right now. This rampant ill-discipline gives the movement a bad name.
The ANCYL should also pay serious attention to strengthening its below-standard organisational machinery. The league is incapable of responding to the challenges of youth development.
It must also address factionalism which is perpetuated to ostracise members who hold different views to its leadership on issues, particularly around ANC succession.
The ANCYL has a deep and long-standing revolutionary tradition of democracy, discipline, consultation and above all, respect for ANC leaders.
It is the practice of these traditions that earned the ANCYL, led by Madiba, Tambo, Sisulu, Mokaba and many more the respect it enjoyed until the early 1990s.
The ANCYL must be constituted of young cadres and activists who will serve as custodians of these revolutionary traditions.
It will help reclaim the league's dignity and respect.
