Absa Cup is no more

Selokela Mosetle, Safa competitions manager, said yesterday that the popular Absa Cup competition will not take place this season.

But they were lining up a prospective partner to take over the competition, he sad.

Mosetle cleared up the issue after reports that some teams, especially in Mpumalanga, have started with the preliminary rounds of the yearly Absa-sponsored tournament.

The Absa Cup was the only competition in the country that gave amateur teams a chance to compete with professional teams.

"There will be no Absa Cup in the current season because Absa is now the Premiership's main sponsor.

"However, those members [regions] who have already started with their preliminary rounds can continue but not call the tournament Absa Cup," said Mosetle.

"We are still awaiting word from the joint liaison committee of Safa and the PSL to give us the prospective partner who will take over the competition and replace the bank."

He said once the sponsor has been replaced, all Safa-registered members will be informed about the kickoff and dates on which to produce winners for regions. He said teams will know this before the recess on December 16.
