Soweto sizzles

Soweto has a significant place in the history and culture of South Africa because of the critical role it played in destroying apartheid.

It is the most-visited township by both local and foreign tourists. It is also the biggest township with a population that constitutes almost 40percent of Johannesburg's 3,4million residents.

Since its establishment, Soweto has had to deal with apartheid injustices of poor housing, poor infrastructure and high unemployment.

Fast-track programmes to eradicate gravel roads have been a huge success, coupled with projects such as access to drinking water, electrification and the upgrading and development of homes and parks in the vibrant township.

Joburg's 2030 strategy, among others, seeks to ensure economic growth and development. Certain economic projects have been undertaken by both private and public sectors.

The City of Johannesburg launched a number of projects and programmes to deepen the infrastructural and economic development in Soweto.

Projects such as Orlando Ekhaya, Maponya Mall, Bara taxi and bus facility, Jabulani Mall, Moroka Dam and Thokoza Park, Vilakazi Street and other related projects are a clear indication of government and the private sectors' commitment to Soweto and its surrounding areas.
