Mabuza clan claims Dube

The Mabuza clan in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, say the death of reggae singer Lucky Dube, 43, has robbed them of a son.

Albert Mabuza, elder brother of Dube's biological father, said the star was a son of his late brother, Jeremiah.

"In the 80s, Jeremiah spoke about a ceremony to acknowledge Lucky as a son of the Mabuza clan.

"I do not know what came of the talks between them, but we knew he was a Mabuza," Mabuza said.

He said though Dube was born and raised by his single mother, Sarah, in Ermelo, he stayed in constant contact with his father, who died in 2002.

Family member Arnold Mabunda said they were busy with funeral arrangements.

"What is important now is to make proper arrangements for his funeral. Other things will be looked at after the funeral," he said.

The Dube family want a private funeral.

Dube was shot dead last week in an apparent botched hijacking as he dropped off his two children at their uncle's home in Rosettenville.

The reggae star's website says "he was born after failed pregnancy attempts by his mother Sarah. His mother considered his birth so fortunate that she aptly named him Lucky."

Dube joined the school choir and when the choirmaster walked out of practice one day, he took over as choirmaster.

Dube's funeral will take place at Farmers' Hall in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday.
